Mode of Action
- Cefpodoxime Proxetil binds with bacterial transpeptidase and inhibits the cross-linking of Peptidoglycan.
- This leads to bacterial cell wall synthesis inhibition and thus, death of the bacteria.
- However, some bacteria produce Beta-lactamase enzyme that breaks the beta-lactam ring of Cefpodoxime Proxetil thus, making it ineffective.
- In such a scenario, Potassium Clavulanate provides its own Beta-lactam ring as a substrate for Beta-lactamase enzyme thus, saving Cefpodoxime Proxetil which then exerts its bactericidal activity.
